Uileacu Şimleului / Somlyóújlak

The bells can be found in the belltower, built in 1823 beside the church. The history of the church is connected with the village history. It is mentioned as "Wathasomlyója" in 1258, as the son of Watha (Vata), Watha and son of Dénes, Pósa sold the property inherited from their ancestors to palatine Lóránt from the Rátót family and Móric from the clan of Pok (who is courtjudicial of the queen, later tárnokmester).

Móric founded the premonstratenser monastery of Árpás, near Győr (Hungary), before 1251. As the church of Uileacu Şimleului/Somlyóújlak shows in many regards similarities with the village-churches of Transdanubia region/Dunántúl-Hungary (the dividing columns of the coupled-windows and niche-row of the nave are similar to Egregy, Őriszentpéter, Kallósd, the tower to Szigliget), it might very well be, that it was built by Móric after 1258, who owned territories in the Transdanubia region/Dunántúl too. This explanation answers the question of the obvious mixture of the two stiles - romanesque and gothic.

The casetted ceiling was built in 1773, the banister of the western gallery (that of the young men) and the crown of the pulpit in 1775.

The southern and northern galleries open to the main nave through double window-rows. The galleries are supported by semicircular niches. The original state of the choir is unknown. It's form today is of the 19th century. The way up to the tower-gallery goes through a stairway in the west wall. From here one can access the two side-galleries that open to the main nave.

The two lower tower niveaus are rectangular, the two upper octogonal. The rectangular form is transfered to the octogonal one with the help of pyramids, similar with that of the tower in Avas (Hungary). The semicircular door and twin-windows on the fourth level cite the romanic style, but the structure as such is gothic.
